False lashes usually look fake for one of two reasons.
They're either the wrong lash for the eye, or they're sitting in the wrong place.
You don't necessarily need a more expensive pair.
A few small adjustments can make an inexpensive strip look much more convincing.
Choose uneven lashes
Natural eyelashes aren't all the same length.
A perfectly uniform strip can look artificial before you even apply it.
Look for lashes with varied lengths and tapered ends.
Wispy styles tend to blend more easily because they leave some visible space between hairs.
Don't automatically choose the longest pair
Longer isn't always prettier.
If your false lashes sit far above your eyebrow area or cast a heavy shadow over your eye, they're going to be noticeable.
A shorter pair of wispy false lashes can make the lash line look much fuller without announcing that you're wearing a strip.
Trim the band
An untrimmed lash often gives itself away at the corners.
Measure before applying glue.
If the strip extends beyond your natural eye, shorten it.
The band should sit comfortably rather than being forced into place.
Place it close to your natural lashes
A visible strip of skin between your real lashes and false lashes immediately breaks the illusion.
Look downward into a mirror and position the band right above the roots of your natural lashes.
Not on the lashes themselves.
Just very close.
Use a thin band
Clear and very thin lash bands are easier to hide.
They're particularly useful if you don't want to wear much eyeliner.
Thicker black bands can still look good, but they're better when the makeup includes enough eyeliner to blend them in.
Curl first
If your natural lashes point downward and the false lashes point upward, you'll see two separate layers.
Curl your own lashes before applying the strip.
Once the adhesive has set, gently press the two layers together.
Use mascara lightly
You don't need to coat the false lashes heavily.
Often a small amount of mascara focused on your real lashes is enough to blend them into the strip.
Too much mascara can make soft false lashes look chunky.
Hide the inner edge
The inner corner is where false lashes most often look obvious.
Don't place the band too close to the tear duct.
Start it slightly farther outward and use a tiny bit of eyeliner to blend the beginning of the band.
Comfort and appearance usually improve at the same time.
Try half lashes
If full strips always look too dramatic, cut the lash and use only the outer section.
Half lashes are easier to blend and can add definition without changing the entire eye.
A pair of light natural-looking lashes can also be cut into several smaller sections and used almost like clusters.
Remember that "natural" depends on your makeup
Natural doesn't always mean invisible.
If you're wearing anime-inspired makeup, you may still want noticeable spikes.
The goal is for the lashes to feel like they belong to the rest of the eye rather than looking stuck on afterward.
That's a better test than asking whether someone can tell you're wearing false lashes.
